Day #47 – But Who’s Counting?!

We have been away from Toronto for 50 days, in Kazakhstan for 48 days, and have known Zoe Yerkezhan for 47 days. Not that we are counting.

We have been her full fledged, legal, certified, documented and real parents for 5 days. In 5 more days, she will (hopefully) be living with us. Yes, we are definitely counting that one!

On the Kazakh paper chase front, Zoe Yerkezhan Yeomans acquired a passport this morning. Yeah! Her passport will now be sent to Astana (Kazakhstan’s capital city) to get an exit visa. Then our coordinator will take the passport to the Canadian embassy in Moscow to get the permanent resident visa. Those are the final two paperwork steps before we are able to return to Canada.

Tomorrow is Nauryz, a holiday even bigger than Women’s Day. The whole country is taking a 3 day weekend (including the office in Astana that will process Zoe’s exit visa). The baby house is closed to visitations all 3 days, but our coordinator has, once again, negotiated a visit for us on Monday. Since we have tomorrow off, our translator has invited us to join her and her sister in partaking of some of the local festivities. We would rather visit Zoe. No, we would rather bring Zoe with us! But being out on the town in the 65 degree sunshine is an acceptable consolation activity.

Zoe’s cold continues to improve. She was to see the doctor again after our visit for more nose heat treatment as well as the mystery “light in the throat” treatment.

Zoe continues to put everything in her mouth. We purchased several teething rings during our first week here. She was happily distracted by them for a couple weeks and will still chew on them occasionally. Her preferred teething implement, however, is the velcro end of a pacifier clip (used to secure a pacifier to an article of clothing and prevent it from dropping to the floor - by the way, pacifiers are strongly frowned upon at our baby house, though used regularly at some other baby houses). The velcro end remains the favored source of comfort when nothing else works to distract her. It is in her mouth in this photo.
She likes playing peek-a-boo behind the couch. Here she is blowing a kiss to Julian at the other end.Nothing is funnier than what Daddy looks like without his glasses.

Hi guys. As always the photos are lovely. How cute is that one with her playing peek a boo with Daddy behind the couch. I firmly believe one of the greatest gifts our kids give us is the window and doorway to re-visit and re-live our own childhoods!!

The velcro is probably massaging her gums a bit. What about a toothbrush (not being a parent yet, I'm not sure whether this is a no-no or not - but seemed logical and good practice!)? Can't wait to see your photos of the weekend. Try to have fun even without Zoe - she needs to recover from her cold so you can break her out next week. Yay, next week!

I am so glad Zoe's cold is better and that you will have her in your arms in a matter of days!!!!! Enjoy Nauryz - again, it is great that you are able to experience so many cultural activities.

Your pictures are awesome.

Happy Easter :)

Happy New Year from Uralsk.

Can't believe you guys have been in Almaty for over 50 days. But it does sound like you're making some progress on the document front. (yay--can't wait to see you with Zoe back home in your apartment--or better yet in Toronto.)

Tomorrow marks our third week in Uralsk--22 days in Kaz (and I'm counting.) Time seems to pass slowly; it seem there's not as much to do here as there is in Almaty, I'm afraid.

Here's hoping Zoe is feeling better soon.
