September 2013

With the new year upon us, it is high time to wrap up blogging about the old.  We left off with the end of our summer travels which was followed immediately by the death of Grandpa John (Julian's dad) on September 1st.  Julian had gone out there in late August and was there when he died.  Zoe and I made a quick excursion to attend the ceremony celebrating John's life on September 7th.

Meanwhile, school started for Zoe on September 3rd.  After two years in half-day kindergarten, the transition to full-day Grade 1 is a big one.  For the month leading up to the start of school, Zoe was full of fear and apprehension.  At our school, the students do not know what room they will be in until they arrive at school on the first morning.  Not knowing who their teacher will be or who their classmates will be only fuels that fear in my opinion.  But it took all of two seconds for Zoe to find a familiar face and she has loved Grade 1 ever since.  She has an amazing teacher and a cohesive class.  We feel very lucky and happy!

September ran its course while we adjusted to our new school routines and enjoyed an occasional outing on weekends.  By the end of the month, luck was still on our side when Zoe fell from the monkey bars after school one day.  With the way she navigates fearlessly on the bars, I have long envisioned a fall with a variety of traumatic endings.  A broken elbow (no blood, no limbs dangling at awkward angles, and not even that many tears) made us feel truly lucky that it wasn't any number of other possible scenarios.  The fact that it happened after doctor office hours on a Friday was not so lucky but Zoe handled the 5 hour wait in the hospital emergency room like a champ!

Riding ponies on Centre Island
The log ride at Centre Island.  Screaming is half the fun!

Still not too big for the fire trucks on Centre Island.
The morning after the fall.  Temporary cast intact.  A real cast was put on a couple days later.
She definitely experienced pain but was able to maintain a smile and great attitude through most of it.
